CUNY’s trustees Wiesenfeld and Schmidt have, in effect, declared themselves virulent anti-Palestinian racists.

CUNY should purge this taint by hosting several conferences on Israel/Palestine to which scholars will be invited without a litmus test for their political tendency.

This is not a bad idea, at CUNY or elsewhere, because the Israel/Palestine conflict has gone on for too long without a fair examination within the USA, especially in the context of the democratic changes sweeping the Arab world today.

I tried to ask a question about the damage done by a short, one-sided discussion of vigorously debated aspects of Middle East politics, like the survival of Israel and the rights of the Palestinians, and which side was more callous toward human life, and who was most protective of it.

But Mr. Wiesenfeld interrupted and said the question was offensive because “the comparison sets up a moral equivalence.”

Equivalence between what and what? “Between the Palestinians and Israelis,” he said. “People who worship death for their children are not human.”

Did he mean the Palestinians were not human? “They have developed a culture which is unprecedented in human history,” he said.
(see NYT story) It appears that Mr. Wiesenfeld believes (and openly professes) that Palestinians are not human.

Mr. Benno Schmidt, the chair of the trustees of CUNY, says that “Trustee Wiesenfeld, whose political views on the matters in controversy [Israel/Palestine] are not far distant from my own” (statement of Benno Schmidt).

May I be forgiven for thinking that both these trustees of New York’s CUNY University system are openly racists? And that the trustees’ decision (perhaps soon to be overturned) to deny an honorary degree to playwright Tony Kushner reported here was, in effect, a form of academic BDS (boycott, divestment, and sanctions) directed at critics (however mild the criticism) of Israel, such as Mr. Kushner, who was denied his honorary degree in part because he supports (or is thought to support) BDS against certain elements of Israeli society described here?

What is to be done?

In order to clear away the racist muck which was uncovered at CUNY when Mssrs Wiesenfeld and Schmidt lifted the rock heretofore almost hiding it, CUNY should set up and sponsor some academically rigorous conferences dealing with all aspects of the Israel/Palestine conflict including its past (pre 1948 history), the ethnic cleansing by Israel of the Palestinians in 1948, and the dreadful recent history of Israeli lawlessness in conducting the occupations of Gaza and the West Bank and in its military attacks (as to some of which the allegation of profound war-crimes have been leveled by the UN’s Goldstone Report) against Gaza (2008-2009) and Lebanon (2006). Scholars should be invited to attend and participate in these conferences on the basis of academic excellence and without regard for the pro-Israel or pro-Palestinian outlook of any (or of all) scholars.
