See the wonderful graphic in The True Cost of US’s Defense Equipment spending.
Wonderful graphic, too big to fit here.
In my untutored opinion, the true cost of the total annual military and “intelligence” and “homeland security” (yes, merely annual, cumulative for 25 years would be mind boggling) would not only pay for the true (and far smaller) costs of defending the USA but would also pay for education, healthcare, seniorcare, and the rebuilding of infrastructure—all of which the USA needs desperately and much of which is threatened or not on the books at all.

And what about those tax-cuts?
And, if you think that tax-cuts for the wealthiest are a bit like unnecessary “defense” spending, read this Newt Gingrich’s Tax Giveaway To Millionaires Is As Large As Entire Medicare BudgetIf that all sounds shockingly redistributive, that’s the point: Gingrich’s tax plan takes $453 billion that is currently scheduled to pay for things like food stamps and bridges and schools, and gives it to people who make at least $1 million a year. That’s shockingly redistributive. Except that instead of helping people pay for food and college and health care and to rise out of poverty, Gingrich’s redistribution gives nearly half a trillion dollars in a single year to millionaires and billionaires.
And, lest we forget, the USA has enemies. Oh, yes! And we choose them carefully. At the bottom of this essay, see a graphical comparison of USA’s “defense” spending with Iran’s!
