Ever wonder why some American Jews who’ve lived in Israel and actually been Israelis have now rejected Israel? Here’s a story, “Dear Israel, this is why I left” about one family which made the choice to raise their children in the USA because Israel is too unsafe for kids—not physically unsafe, but morally unsafe. And the indictment of Israel is severe and important to parents: A society that has become centered on protecting, maintaining and furthering the oppression of another people produces and indeed rewards hate. This is not unique to Israel or Israelis—it’s human. * * * I will protect [my kids] from what Israel has become, and I will raise them to know the Jewish values of human dignity and the sanctity of life.
Do read the whole essay, published at Zion Square, a blog dedicated to explaining “liberal Zionistic” discontent with Israel, especially its settlement project often called the “Greater Israel” project.
Apology: I would reprint much more of this terrific essay here, but copyright considerations persuade me not to.
