SUMMARY
Wartime leaders who have lost their wars but who prolong those wars due to their unwillingness to admit defeat endanger their nations without ultimately avoiding the defeat which they fear.
It is irrational. It has become common.
ESSAY
October 7, 2026
In the current moment we are observing four wars that should have been ended by negotiated surrender by the loser, These wars have been continued due to national or personal hubris and ego beyond a point when wise leaders should have placed the good of their country ahead of ego or pride.
”Death before dishonor” in the form of choosing national suicide in preference to admitting to losing a war (losing a war being perceived by the losers, as “dishonorable”) seems to be the style of the moment. In several of these cases, the irrationality seems to be that of an authoritarian leader. The four wars I write about are:
• USA-Israel v. Iran War (USA: Trump irrational)
• Russia v. Ukraine War (Ukraone: Zelenskyy irrational)
• Saudi Arabia v. Yemen (Ansar Allah) War (Saudi Arabia: MbS irrational)
• Israel v. Lebanon and Palestine and Iran Wars (Israel: Zionist hegemonic project being irrational)
Most wars must have a winner and a loser, but these leaders (or countries) cannot admit that their “side” is already—or even could be—the loser. Countries are irrationally continuing wars which they are demonstrably losing, apparently without the ability to “take no for an answer”. In some cases, the refusal to admit defeat amounts to what Israel calls a ”Masada Complex”, that is, a national decision to commit suicide in preference to admitting defeat. In the case of Israel (see discussion below), it may result in a national decision to employ the ”Samson Option”, that is, to use nuclear weapons against Iran and so bring on a suicidal catastrophe upon itself and its opponents, together.
• USA-Israel v. Iran War
The USA’s leader, President Trump, for reasons of his own ego and perhaps out of frivolous concern for the USA’s already discredited image as a hegemonic “superpower”, will not accept Iran’s terms for ending the USA-Israel-Iran war. These terms are a perfectly clear, fairly unambiguous, and unchanging demand by Iran that the USA live up to the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) that Trump signed in June 2026 and then violated.
The MOU provides a clear “off-ramp” for the USA that would end the war at the cost, presently unacceptable to Trump, of abject capitulation by himself and the USA (and, eventually, by Israel) in a war the USA cannot win, a war the continuation of which has huge costs for the USA and for much of the world, costs which increase every day the war continues and which lead toward world-wide depression.
• Russia v. Ukraine War
Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, will not admit defeat by Russia and by refusing to make peace he brings on the near total destruction of Ukraine, most recently the destruction of the capital city Kiev. The EU, disastrously, is joining this war on Ukraine’s side, risking war with Russia. The foolishness of this, which arises from a long-held hatred or fear of Russia by the EU leaders, is hard to imagine.
• Saudi Arabia v. Yemen (Ansar Allah) War
Saudi Arabia has recently re-heated a long-running genocidal war (largely a war of starvation of Yemen by siege) against the majority faction of divided Yemen (Ansar Allah, “Houtis”). As Yemen’s missiles gradually destroy ARAMCO’s oil refineries and as Yemen’s armies defeat Saudi Arabia’s mercenary forces on the ground, Saudi Arabia nevertheless continues the war even at the risk of an end to monarchical rule in this essentially tribal region. Presumably Yemen would agree to end its war if Saudi Arabia would return to Yemen three southern provinces taken from Yemen in 1934 by Britain and incorporated into Saudi Arabia. By refusing to end this war, Saudi Arabia watches its oil production gradually reduced in ways that will take years to rebuild whilst the world’s need for oil grows and world-wide depression looms.
• Israel v. Lebanon and Palestine and Iran Wars
Israel has a long history of making violent aggressive (and genocidal) war against its neighbors. Its oppression of Palestine began in 1947. Its aggression against Lebanon has been off-and-on for many years and continues at present in genocidal fashion. Its war against Iran, which it induced the USA to join, is fairly recent. Israel has failed to defeat Hamas (its stated objective for its war in Gaza), has failed to defeat Hezbollah in Lebanon, and has failed to defeat Iran. Israel’s purpose in all of these wars has been to become a “hegemon” in West Asia and to extend its borders, to become a “Greater Israel”, all in preference to accepting that it must live within its pre-1967 territory as a peaceful nation among friendly nations (after allowing a Palestinian State to come into existence within the territory of Mandatory Palestine). Israel’s insistence on continuing all these wars is not (or not only) a personal foible of its present leader. Bibi Netanyahu, but appears to be the chosen path of an extremely cruel, bellicose, and murderous people—the Zionist Jews of Israel. As such it is unlikely to change even if Netanyahu loses the up-coming October election. There is talk, today (October 2026), of Israel (or USA) using a nuclear weapon against Iran in an effort to win an otherwise clearly lost war. The “first use” of a nuclear weapon in war has long been recognized as a possible trigger for nuclear retaliation followed—at worst—by the world-wide nuclear catastrophe known as “nuclear winter”,
